Blast from the past

My buddy Dave, came across this animated gif which he captured back on May 9th, 2010.  He shared it with me this morning; awesome.  This is myself, catching a little air at Sprain Ridge, just north of Yonkers outside of NYC.  Dave and I used to ride there pretty regularly.  This Friday, I'm taking the fat bike up to visit him in Manhattan.  Hopefully we'll get out and ride around some of our old stomping grounds.  I especially would like to ride at Cunningham Park in Jamaica, Queens.

Maiden voyage of the Mission 1

This morning I met a friend at Sprain Ridge Park in Yonkers, NY to get a quick and early ride in before the forecast snow began to fly. At 7:30 this morning JP and I were dropping into some gnarly-fun singletrack. It was my first ride on my new full suspension bike. I must say, this bike is incredible. I need to add a few more PSI to the rear shock but other than that the bike rode beautifully. I was throwing it into some really sketchy rock gardens and it seamed to just eat it right up. I also hucked it off a few 3 and 4 footers with no problems. Love it! The only bummer about the ride was that I managed to twist my left knee pretty badly. I have never felt a sensation like it before - like strands of rope snapping. Ouch! I'm hobbling around (again), but I think another trip to the doctor is in order... Below is a quick video made from footage snapped with my iPhone.

Rock on

Last Sunday I ripped around Sprain Ridge Park for a few hours on my singlespeed. Trail conditions were a little moist from the rain we received earlier in the week giving them a tacky/grippy feel. As usual it felt fantastic to turn the cranks and dip & dive through the woods. Riding a singlespeed through a damp forest can be quite surreal in that it is a very quiet experience. Twigs didn't snap beneath my tires and wet leaves helped to muffle my roll. I played around on this boulder for a few minutes before moving on. I wish I had the skills I used to have; I was once so smooth!

Beautious day for a ride

I was up and at em' this morning at 6:45. By 9:00 I had paid the bills, washed the dishes, scarfed down an omelet at the diner, and was on my way down to the bike shop for a new cable guide. The cable guide that mounts under the bottom bracket [BB] shell on my Cannondale simply snaps in place rather than being fixed by a fastener. A rock must have smacked it loose from the shell a couple of rides ago. Without the cable guide firmly fixed, my rear derailleur would not react to the shifter pulling cable in the larger cog range (The guide would move instead of the derailleur). This is quite annoying when you're grinding up a steep trail and mis-shifting loudly along the way: "Ch-ch-ch-chung, chung, CHUNG!".

$7.68 later, I had a new cable guide and was headed back uptown, (angrily I might add). Riddle me this: If a customer pays $2,500 for a bike at your shop and this small cheap piece breaks, why on earth, would you nickle & dime him the $7.68? I was pissed and shook my head as I paid. I cannot stand Sid's Bike Shops here in NYC. The staff I've interacted with all have shitty attitudes, are not helpful and their merchandise is overpriced compared to other shops in the area (OK, I'm done bitching).
When I got home I performed some quick maintenance on the Cannondale. I removed my Grapefruit Spoon Chain Guide (which wasn't very effective) and reinstalled my front derailleur. Since I'm only running a 32T ring up front, I adjusted the limit screws such that the front derailleur was working as a chain guide instead of a shifting component. With the new cable guide snapped into place I adjusted my rear derailleur, cleaned & lubed my chain and was off to catch a train out of the city.

The weather today was perfect; mid 80's and sunny with a slight breeze. The trails were bone dry again, but made for rip-tacular riding. I was completely "on" today and cleaned a section I've never gotten past before. Last winter it tossed me over the bars breaking my front brake lever body and messing up my left knee pretty bad. I took a few breaks to snack and take in the scenery. Chipmunks scurried all over the place. I swear there are more chipmunks per square foot at Sprain Ridge than anywhere else in the world. I came across a huge dead dragon fly and wondered how it died and why it wasn't eaten. It looked to be ideal bird food to me (Click here for a 1:1 close up of his crazy eyes).

Phattire video

Last Sunday, while riding at Sprain Ridge Park I took some footage with my iPhone (3GS). This involved perching my phone atop rocks and logs, held fast by small twigs and pebbles. An iPhone tripod would have been really nice although goes against my low-tech intentions. Once I had the phone precariously balanced I'd grab my bike, ride through the scene, and double back for the camera. I did this about ten times until my battery was just about dead. To make the most of my footage I added the "out takes" and camera grabs. At any rate, enjoy.

Dirt

Yesterday I took a train up to Sprain Ridge Park and ripped around in the woods for a few hours. I got there around two o'clock in the afternoon and didn't see another soul on the trails (That's a first). The weather was hot and humid; the trails were bone dry, the vegetation; wilting from the heat. I took it easy, stopping often for snapshots with my iPhone, to catch my breath and take in the sights. I love the terrain at Sprain Ridge. The topography is one thing, with enough hills to tire you out, but the ground itself is a perfect mix of baby-head sized rocks, rooty sections, logs, switchbacks along exposed rock faces and bermed turns.

The ride was perfect, even with the small time-out I took to fix my 42 tooth chain ring. I had smashed it into the rocks a few too many times and bent the tips of several teeth in towards the center line of my bike. I knew I'd need the big ring to get back to the train and didn't want to prematurely fatigue (loosen the links) my chain, so I grabbed the nearest file (rock) and went to town on those teeth. (Blurry photo of teeth burs here.)

Man, I love mountain biking.

My good friend and riding buddy, Mr.Seinberg took this image last sunday while we rode at Sprain Ridge Park. Soooo much fun...

Sprain Ridge Park

I spent a few hours in the woods yesterday at Sprain Ridge Park (trail map here) just north of Yonkers, NY. The trails were in pristine condition. Me and the three guys I was with blasted through the woods sailing over logs, rocks & small animals. It was heaven! (And much needed after all the recent moving and craziness at work) My buddy Dave, tracked our 7+ mile ride with his phone which is always cool to see (take a look here). It was so great to be out on my new cannondale. I have only taken it out 4 or 5 times and each time it was in the snow. Felt fantastic to fly through the woods and put the suspension to work on hard packed dirt. So plush... so plush.

Highlights of the ride:
  • Steve's over-the-bars endo about 5 minutes into the ride. His tuck n' roll maneuver, seemingly well practiced, saved him from a broken neck, and provided for some great heckling from the rest of us. Dave got a great shot of him flying through the air, that I'll have to link you to when its online. (Edit: See Steve's Endo!)
  • Mark conquered a steep rock roll down which shook him up pretty good on his first approach. Nice going Mark!
  • I found a fantastic old, brown, glass jug/bottle. The date code on the bottom of it tells me that it was made by Owens Illinois Glass Company in Bridgetown, NJ in 1948. It cleaned up nicely and is now part of the many "old things" I keep in the bike room.
  • Dave, after crashing, and leaving some skin from his hand on the trail, cleaned a particularly nasty section of trail. Check out the Youtube video.
It was a pretty much a perfect ride. Lots of laughs, lots of fun and a good work out. I returned home tired, but not exhausted and I'm looking forward to riding more dirt next weekend. Maybe up at Blue Mountain in Peekskill; we'll see...

New Year's Eve Ride at Sprain Ridge

Well, the ride today was pretty awesome. I rendezvoused with Alex on the train and we rode from the Hastings on Hudson Station to the trail head. That was quite a miserable jaunt. The roads were slushy and cold salty water soaked our butts on the way to the trail.

I love my new F1. It handles great and I love the Lefty. Locking out the fork and throwing the chain on to the big ring on the way to the trails was a joy. I didn't miss the single speed at all today. The Lefty took up the hits, big and small, with ease and gave me a lot more confidence in the descents. (although we didn't carry much speed anywhere today in the snow)

Alex, just after wiping out on solid ice -ouch!

Two to three inches of snow made the riding a little tough. Alex went down on solid ice a few times today and I'm sure he's sore now! I took a nice dive over the handlebars in a baby-head strewn switchback. I sailed through the air, downhill and remember tucking my chin in just before my helmet made contact with a few big rocks. My left knee took a hard hit on an unforgiving rock/root and I have a nice lump to show for it. Getting up, I was shocked to see that I actually broke my front brake lever body. I couldn't believe it. I've never seen a lever body brake like that. (pictures in the gallery below)
Loving my new F1

We weren't' the only ones on the trail this morning though. We came across a herd of deer which didn't seem frightened by us. The woods were silent as large flakes floated down and the deer stood looking at us, flicking their ears nibbling on... whatever they were nibbling on. We also saw some tire tracks from another rider who was out before us.

Sprain Ridge Park - Yonkers, NY

What an awesome day of riding at Sprain Ridge Park in Yonkers. Dave, Alex and I rode for a few hours on some excellent singletrack. I loved all the drops and steep roll-downs. Got a real good work out on the hills as well. The end of North Brother's Loop totally kicked my ass! I can't wait to hit this place again when I get my new Cannondale. (Gears & suspension baby!) I'm thoroughly exhausted from the ride. A good night's rest will do me good.

Thanks to Dave for the awesome photos!
